Grounding systems are an integral part of any working substation. These ground grids offer a low impedance path to earth for ground fault currents or currents from devices such as surge protectors or lightning rods. Important functions of substation ground grids include:
- Supplying neutrals for generators, transformers, etc with an earth connection.
- Limiting potential differences between metallic components of the substation and the earth.
- Allowing a grounding point to de-energize equipment for maintenance safely.
